Paris: The third round of the singles at the 2004 French Open on Friday saw fifth seed Carlos Moya thrashing Dutchman Raemon Sluiter 6-0, 6-3, 6-4 . Moya will meet compatriot and 17th seed Tommy Rebredo in the next round for a place in the quarterfinals. There were two popular victories for homegrown talent as both Nicolas Escude and Amelie Mauresmo qualified for the last 16 on the Parisian red clay. The unseeded 28-year-old Escude advanced after beating Russian Mikhail Youzhy 6-2, 7-5, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2 and he will now face 2003 semi-finalist Guillermo Coria of Argentina. Third seed Mauresmo of France, whose best Roland Garros performance was reaching the quarterfinals last year, defeated Arantxa Parra Santonja of Spain 6-3, 6-2 and the 24-year-old will now play Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria. Earlier on, the 17-year-old Maria Sharapova, seeded 18, won the battle of the Russian teenagers as she beat 10th-seed Vera Zvonareva 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) and now meets German Marlene Weingartner, in round four.
