Buenos Aires, Argentina:
Unseeded Sergio Roitman defeated Argentine compatriot and eighth-seeded Jose Acasuso 7-6 (4), 6-1 on Monday night in a lopsided playoff at the 445,000 dollar ATP Copa Telmex. Roitman and Acasuso battled to 6-6 in the opening set of Monday's showcase match on the clay at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club before Roitman took the tiebreaker 7-4 thanks Acasuso's repeated unforced errors. With many of his forehands going long over the baseline, Acasuso never found his groove after dropping the first set. In the second, Roitman went up 3-0 before Acasuso won the fourth game when his serve momentarily held. On Roitman's ensuing service game, Acasuso had a breakpoint, but pounded a forehand long over the baseline to squander a chance to pull back into the set. Acasuso threw his racket to the ground after missing the chance, and then Roitman's big serve gave him the final points to go up 4-1. He broke Acasuso once more before serving out at 6-1. "To be able to beat Jose at home is just a dream," Roitman said. "I'm so happy. This is just incredible. I was very focused, very focused the entire match and that's what gave me the victory." Earlier on Monday, in other draw elimination playoffs, Diego Hartfield was the only other Argentine to prevail in a crowded field of locals as he defeated Denis Gremelmayr of Germany, 7-6 (5), 6-1. In other matches, France's Nicolas Devilder beat Juan Pablo Brzezicki of Argentina 6-3, 5-7, 6-3; Italy's Potito Starace defeated Argentina's Mariano Zabaleta 7-6 (9), 6-2. Two other Italians also were victorious: Alessio di Mauro beat Argentine Carlos Berlocq 6-1, 6-3, while Italy's Stefano Galvani defeated Argentine Diego Junquiera, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. In a Group 4 round robin, Russian Igor Andreev beat Spain's Alberto Martin, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.
