Umag, Croatia: Third-seeded Marcelo Rios dropped out in the opening round of the $381,000 Croatia Open ATP tournament, losing to Victor Hanescu of Romania 0-6, 4-6. Rios, who was returning to the men's circuit after a three-month knee injury, lost the first nine games before levelling 3-3 for a possible comeback in the second set. But the Chilean failed to convert two break points at 4-4 and had to bow out of the seaside tournament in straight sets. Rios was the second big name to stumble out of the first round at the Croatia Open after Wimbledon finalist and top-seeded David Nalbandian of Argentina was also knocked out in opening round play on Monday. In other first round action, Peruvian Luis Horna defeated Albert Montanes of Spain, 7-5, 6-2, while Nicolas Massu of Chile crushed Jan Vacek of the Czech Republic, 6-0, 6-2. Austrian Jurgen Melzer led Vincent Spadea of the United States 2-6, 6-3 and 4-2 before the American had to forfeit the match due to injury. (AP)
