France's Virginie Razzano marked her first seeded position in a year at a WTA Tour event by defeating China's Sun Tiantian 6-0, 7-5 in the Prague Open first round on Monday.

Razzano, seeded No 7 and the only seed in action on opening day, earned her first win in the European clay season.

Julia Schruff ended a three-match losing streak in beating Bulgaria's Tsvetana Pironkova 6-4, 7-6 (3) for her first win since reaching the Acapulco semifinals in early March.

Fellow German Sandra Kloesel won her first main draw match since November against Thai veteran Tamarine Tanasugarn, 7-5, 6-0.

Milagros Sequera of Venezuela, the last automatic entry with a 94th ranking, outplayed Julie Ditty of the United States 6-2, 6-4, only three days after losing to Ditty in the semifinals of a minor clay tournament in the U.S.
