Martina Hingis has defeated sixth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia 7-6 (7), 6-2 Thursday to advance to the last four of the $600,000 Qatar Open.

Martina Hingis has defeated sixth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia 7-6 (7), 6-2 to advance to the last four of the $600,000 Qatar Open.With this win, Hingis has reached the semifinals for the third time in her last five tournaments.The 25-year-old Swiss, who won five Grand Slam titles before an injury to her left ankle forced her off the WTA Tour for three years until her return in January, needed 96 minutes to defeat Kuznetsova."It was a pretty impressive win,'' she said. Hingis reached the semifinals in her return at the Gold Coast, Australia, event, advanced to the quarterfinals at the Australian Open and entered the final at Tokyo in early February. Her only setback was a first-round elimination by Justine Henin-Hardenne in Sydney in mid-January.The Swiss next will face top seed and No. 2-ranked Amelie Mauresmo of France, who beat Roberta Vinci of Italy 6-4, 6-0.Petrova winsIn other quarterfinals on Thursday, second seeded Nadia Petrova of Russia beat Li Na of China 6-4, 6-4 , while Ai Sugiyama of Japan overcame the challenge of Julia Schruff of Germany 6-3, 6-2.After winning the first-set tiebreak, Hingis broke a limping Kuznetsova three times in the second set."She is a powerful girl,'' Hingis said of Kuznetsova. "She is deeper in the forehand. I tried not to give her too many opportunities and gave balls on her backhand. I was successful with my strategy,'' added Hingis.Mauresmo, who already has three titles this year, broke Vinci three times in the second set to finish the match in less than an hour."The first set was a bit long on time. Once I settled into the match, I was under no pressure in the second set. I played my normal game and won easily,'' Mauresmo said.Earlier Petrova, who has one WTA Tour title to her credit, opened with a service break and earned another in game seven to win the first set. The Russian and Li started with the three breaks to open the second set and give Petrova a 2-1 lead. Both held serve the rest of the way, enabling Petrova to complete the victory in 91 minutes.
