Halle:

Leander Paes' preparation to win the Wimbledon doubles crown began on a wrong note when the Davis Cup star, playing with Donald Johnson of USA, made a first round exit from the $8,00,000 grass court tournament in Halle, Germany, yesterday. Paes and Johnson, the third seeds, went down to Pavel Vizner and Tomas Cibulec of the Czech Republic 2-6, 6-7 (2/7). Paes reached the semi-finals of the French Open last week partnering another Czech David Rikl. The other Indian doubles specialist Mahesh Bhupathi has opted to kick-start his campaign at the Queen's Club in London. Bhupathi and Mirnyi, who bowed to Paes and Rikl in the quarterfinals at Roland Garros, were seeded second and had a first round bye at the $7,75,000 event. They were to play Jarkko Nieminen of Finland and Raemon Sluitter of the Netherlands in the second round. (PTI)
