Novak wins first round of Swiss Open

Jiri Novak began the defence of his Swiss Open title with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Argentina's Jose Acasuso in the opening round of the $544,750 event.

Gstaad: Jiri Novak began the defence of his Swiss Open title with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Argentina's Jose Acasuso in the opening round of the $544,750 clay-court event on Monday. With the victory, fourth-seeded Novak improved his record to 14-4 in Gstaad. The Czech will be looking to make up for his performance at Wimbledon, where he lost in the opening round to Belgian Xavier Malisse in straight sets. Novak is seeking his third title here, having already lifted the trophy in 2001 and 2003. Spain's Albert Costa was the last player to defeat the Czech in Gstaad, downing him in the quarterfinals in 2000. (AP)
