Oeiras: Top-seeded David Nalbandian won comfortably on Thursday to line up a match with local Frederico Gil, the first Portuguese to reach the quarterfinals of the Estoril Open in 11 years. Nalbandian, the 2002 Estoril champion, accounted for French lucky loser Jeremy Chardy 6-1, 7-6 (0) in the second round. Gil, making his Estoril debut with a wild card, upset fifth-seeded Dmitry Tursunov of Russia 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 to become only the third Portuguese ever to reach the quarterfinals at Estoril, and the first since Nuno Marques in 1995. Sixth-seeded Carlos Moya hit 17 aces in beating Argentine qualifier Gustavo Marcaccio 6-1, 7-5. The Spaniard, who won at Estoril six years ago, dropped only 10 points in the first set but struggled to keep his momentum in the second. Next up for Moya was countryman Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who rallied to a narrow triumph over Argentina's Carlos Berlocq 6-7 (11), 7-5, 7-6 (5). In women's play, third-seeded Lourdes Dominguez Lino of Spain overcame Kaia Kanepi of Estonia 6-1, 6-4 and will meet seventh-seeded Emilie Loit, the 2004 champ, in the quarterfinals. Loit defeated Argentine qualifier Natalia Gussoni 6-2, 6-2. Two Chinese players also made it through. Sixth-seeded Zheng Jie beat Spain's Laura Pous Tio 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, while eighth-seeded Li Na, a finalist last year, knocked out Czech Katerina Bohmova 6-1, 6-0. (AP)
