Chennai:

Twice champions Carlos Moya of Spain took his appointed place in the quarterfinal with a 6-3 7-6 (4) 6-2 win over Teimuraz Gabashvili of Russia in the Chennai Open ATP tournament on Wednesday to keep his ambition of regaining the title.

Third seeded Moya, lucky to have been drawn to play a qualifier in the first round, played to his game plan of allowing his rival, a direct entrant, to enjoy the advantage for consolation, but never allowed him to dictate terms though he was broken once in the second set.

The 31-year old Moya, who missed his third successive title here in 2006 losing to Croatian Ivan Ljubicic in the summit clash, maintained his superiority throughout the match.

The championship is heading to an interesting finish with the possibility of top seeded compatriot Rafel Nadal and Moya in line for progressing to the semifinals for a fight between the "guru" and the student.

Moya, a big crowd puller here, has a fairly easy match next against debutant to ATP Tour Florent Serra, who accounted for higher rated Ivan Navarro of Spain. Another Spaniard to exit is Bartolome Salva-Vidal, who rates Nadal as his idol.
