New York:

Third seed Carlos Moya, a semi-finalist in 1998, looked on course for victory against unseeded Belgian Olivier Rochus at the US Open. Moya he captured the first set and moved ahead by a break in the second. But as Rochus worked his way into the contest, the mistakes started flowing from the Spaniard. Moya hit 61 unforced errors in the three hour, 38 minute match. The Spaniard, who had beaten Rochus in both of their previous encounters, dug deep to clinch the fourth set on a tiebreak and even broke for a 4-3 lead in the decider. However, he squandered the advantage in the next game and Rochus, who had never won any of his previous four matches at Flushing Meadows, produced an inspired performance to win 4-6 6-4 6-3 6-7 7-5 as Moya surrendered the match with his eighth double fault. Rochus will play Slovakia's Dominik Hrbaty, who ousted 15th seed Paradorn Srichaphan, for a place in the quarterfinals. Federer cruisesFabrice Santoro had beaten number one seed Roger Federer twice in their previous six meetings, but the 31st seeded Frenchman looked shell-shocked after being hammered 6-0 in the opening set. Federer's game flowed as he hit 56 winners, breaking in the 10th game of the second set to take control 6-4. The world number one, bidding to become the first man to win three grand slam titles in the same year since Mats Wilander in 1988, was tested in the third set but came through in just over two hours. Santoro, one of the most creative players on tour, saved four match points in the third-set tiebreak but Federer eventually took it 9-7 for a straight sets victory. Agassi rolls onAndre Agassi kept the ball rolling for the older generation by demolishing Czech Jiri Novak, the 25th seed, 6-4 6-2 6-3 to reach the fourth round. The 34-year-old, champion in 1994 and 1999, needed just 92 minutes to reach the last 16. Agassi broke serve for the sixth time to wrap up victory on his fourth match point. (AP)
