Madrid: Max Mirnyi powered his way to a 7-5 7-6(2) win over Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero in the Madrid Masters on Tuesday, setting up a second round clash with Mariano Puerta. The big-serving Mirnyi was on the back foot early on, with Ferrero's fleet-footed net play. Mirnyi, nicknamed 'the beast', broke Ferrero's serve in the 12th game to take the first set. The Spaniard broke back early in the second, and had three chances for a second break. But Ferrero was unable to take the opportunity, and Mirnyi punished him, breaking back before winning the second set tie break. Home support In a second round match, Fernando Verdasco of Spain took on Chile's Ferando Gonzalez, the 15th seed. Despite enjoying the support of a vociferous home crowd, Verdasco was not at his best in the first set, which Gonzalez took by six games to three. Verdasco found his game in the second set, however, taking it 6-1 much to the delight of the home fans. But the Chilean fought back brilliantly in the deciding set. The final score was 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.
