Mauresmo into Rogers Cup final

Montreal: France's Amelie Mauresmo closed in on her third WTA Tour title of the year when she defeated Vera Zvonareva 7-6, 6-2 to reach the final of the Rogers Cup on Saturday. Mauresmo will play the winner of second semi-final match between the number three seed Anastasia Myskina and the unseeded Russian Elena Likhovtseva. Having easily beaten Tatiana Golovin 6-3, 6-1 in the quarter final of the Rogers Cup, Vera Zvonareva looked to be a strong opponent for the number two seed Amelie Mauresmo. The nineteen year old Russian broke service on the opening game and led 5-3 in the first set. But then let it slip away double faulting twice and hitting an easy groundstroke into the net - letting Mauresmo break back for 5-5. However she regained her composure winning a controversial point to level the game six all to go to a tie break. The fourteen seed continued her winning run taking a 5-1 led in the tiebreaker, moving an angry Mauresmo to smash a ball into Uniprix Stadium's upper reaches. But the Frenchwoman bounced back, serving an ace for a 7-6 lead. The set was sealed after Zvonareva double-faulted on set point. In the second set Zvonareva once again dominated but Mauresmo broke service again for a 2-1 second-set lead when the heavens opened and delayed play for fifty two minutes. On return the french woman found another gear and dominating the second set took the match 7-6 6-2. The number two seed, who won the title in 2002 looks set to edge closer to her third. But she will now face the winner of second semi-final match between the number three seed Anastasia Myskina and the unseeded Russian Elena Likhovtseva. (AP)
