Doha:

Seventh-seeded Conchita Martinez of Spain beat Britain's Lucie Ahl 6-0, 6-2 on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the $1,70,000 Qatar Open tennis tournament. Playing near-perfect tennis in cool conditions, Martinez lost just two games and breezed past Ahl in less than an hour at the Khalifa Tennis Complex. "My game is getting better each day. I am happy with my form," said Martinez, the 1994 Wimbledon champion. In Friday's quarterfinals, Martinez will play Lina Krasnoroutskaya of Russia, who upset top-seeded Monica Seles in the first round. "Lina is one of the better Russian players on the circuit. I played her at the Wimbledon last year and, although I beat her, she still gave me a tough time. I have to be at my best to tackle her," Martinez said. In other second-round action, Australian Nicole Pratt beat Angelique Widjaja of Indonesia 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in just over two hours. Fifth-seeded Elena Likhovtseva of Russia breezed past Iroda Tulyaganova of Uzbekistan 6-1, 6-4, and Patricia Wartusch of Austria rallied from a set down to overcome Maria Vento-Kabchi of Venezuela 0-6, 6-3, 6-4.
