Chennai:
Leander Paes' record of not progressing beyond the first round of the championship here rang true again. He went down to Russian Andrei Stoliarov 3-6 1-6 in 55 minutes in the first round singles match of the Tata Open tennis tournament. Leander's best-ever performance in this seven-year-old tournament was a semi-final loss to Patrick Rafter of Australia, the winner in 1998. The Indian challenge now hinges on the performance on Mahesh Bhupathi, a wildcard entrant like Leander, who plays Jiri Vanek of Czech Republic, a regular to this tournament. The other five singles matches saw seeds making a flying start and taking their appointed places. Fourth seeded Andrei Pavel of Romania defeated Juan Antonio Marin 6-3 6-3. Marin was accommodated in place of Oliver Marach of Austria, who did not show up for this important match. Dominik Hrbaty (sixth seed) of Slovakia accounted for Axel Pretzsch of Germany 6-1 6-4. Second seed Thomas Johansson of Sweden defeated Ivo Heuberger of Switzerland 6-4 6-4. (PTI)Topics mentioned in this article
