India blank China in Davis Cup

India taught the Chinese a lesson or two about playing on grass as they blanked the visitors 5-0 in the Davis Cup Asia Oceania Group I tie on Sunday. With an unassailable 3-0 lead under their belt, Prakash Amritraj and Harsh Mankad wrapped up the two dead rubbers in just under two hours of playing time to complete the clean sweep. While Prakash thrashed Sun Peng 6-2 6-4 in 48 minutes, Harsh overpowered Lu Hao 6-2 6-3 in one hour and five minutes. In fact, the only blip in India's near-perfect demolition of the Chinese was the dropping of a set by their former world number one doubles pair of Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes on Saturday. Paes and Bhupathi won the doubles rubber 7-6 (13/11) 6-3 3-6 6-1 against Wang Yu and Zhu Ben-Qiang after Prakash defeated Wang Yu 6-3 6-4 6-2 in a match which had to be completed on the second day after match officials called off play on Friday due to rain. Harsh had given India a flying start on the opening day with a 7-5 6-3 6-2 win over Peng. India will now take on the winner of the match between Indonesia and Uzbekistan from April 29-May 1 for a place in the World Group play-off to be held in September. (PTI)
