Hyderabad: Sania Mirza and Shikha Uberoi kept the Indian flag flying with a thumping first round doubles win while Ankita Bhambri became the first Indian casualty at the $140,000 WTA Tour Hyderabad Open today. After Ankita's singles loss to Alyona Bondarenko of Ukraine 3-6, 2-6, Sania and Shikha brought smiles back on Indian faces by downing the Chinese pair of Chin-Wei Chan and Na Li 6-4, 7-5 in a pulsating match. The day also saw the event's first upset with third seed Tatiana Panova of Russia losing 3-6, 6-7 (2-7) to wild card entrant Shahar Peer of Israel. The 28-year-old from Moscow, who attained the career high singles ranking of 20 in September 2002 and currently ranked 60, was clearly outplayed by Peer, the world number 132. It was an emotional moment for Shikha, who played her maiden match for India. "It was an honour and a proud moment for me," said the 21-year-old American of Indian-origin. "I had been waiting for this moment for a long time". Shikha and Sania combined well to put it across their Chinese opponents who threatened a comeback in the second set before the home team doused the fire. (PTI)
