Martina Hingis made a surprise appearance at the Sony Ericsson Championships, eight days after retiring because she is accused of failing a doping test.

The former top-ranked Swiss player said on November 1 she had been told that a urine sample taken at Wimbledon had returned a positive test for cocaine. Her 'B' sample also returned as positive.

Hingis, who has won five Grand Slams, announced her retirement despite denying she had doped. "I'm sorry I cannot comment on the case for legal reasons," Hingis said on Friday. "I'm just here to watch tennis tonight. I cannot say anything. Sorry."

The 27-year-old Hingis is fighting the positive result, arguing that inconsistencies were found with the urine sample.

Hingis, who twice won the season-ending Sony Ericsson Championships, returned to tennis two years ago after a four-year absence because of injuries.
