Hewitt wins Washington title

Washington:

Second-seeded Lleyton Hewitt beat Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 6-3 6-4 in the Legg Mason Classic final to win his third title of the year. After victories in Sydney in January and Rotterdam in February, Hewitt became the first Australian to win in Washington since Tony Roche in 1972. Muller eliminated top-seeded Andre Agassi yesterday to reach his first final, but the 21-year-old left-hander's run ended a day later against Hewitt. Entering the week, Muller had won just one ATP match. Muller, who whiffed on a backhand in the third game of the match, saved the first five break points he faced before Hewitt pulled ahead 4-3. Hewitt broke again to close the first set. Hewitt served for the match at 5-3, but for the second time in the set the Australian double-faulted to end a game, allowing Muller to get back on serve. Muller failed to take advantage of either opportunity. His double-fault gave Hewitt two match points, and he won his 22nd career title when Muller's drop shot landed in the net. (AP)
