Beijing: Top-seeded Jelena Jankovic retired because of heat illness against third-seeded Anna Chakvetadze of Russia in the semifinals of the Guangzhou Open on Saturday. Serbia's Jankovic was trailing 7-5, 2-0 when she quit, handing Chakvetadze her first berth in a WTA Tour final. "It was not the way I would have preferred to arrive there. But I am here, so I hope to win my first title," said Chakvetadze. "I think I was playing very well today, although I know Jelena was having problems. I felt I had a good game and I look forward to Sunday's final." She will meet fourth-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain, who ground past Tzipi Obziler of Israel 7-5, 2-6, 6-4. Medina Garrigues used the compulsory heat break after the second set to regather her focus, and ultimately advance. The Spaniard was 6-2 in career finals, and won both of her previous finals this year at Canberra and Palermo. However, Chakvetadze has won all three of their matchups, including two this year in Berlin and Los Angeles. (AP)
