New York: The final Grand Slam of the year, US Open, started with some big upsets on day 1. Defending champion Svetlana Kuznetsova crashed out of the tournament following a 6-3, 6-2 defeat to world number 97 Ekaterina Bychkova. The second major upset of the day came on the Grandstand Court. The ninth seed Gaston Gaudio lost to American wild card Brain Baker 7-6, 6-2, 6-4. Maria Sharapova, women's top seed, blasted her way past Eleni Daniilidou of Greece 6-1, 6-1 in just 66 minutes. Sharapova was crowned the world number one just last week. Fourth seed Kim Clijsters needed just 53 minutes on the Louis Armstrong court before sealing a comprehensive 6-1, 6-2, first round victory over Martina Mueller of Germany.
