New York: The final Grand Slam of the year, US Open, started with some big upsets on day 1. Defending champion Svetlana Kuznetsova crashed out of the tournament following a 6-3, 6-2 defeat to world number 97 Ekaterina Bychkova.The second major upset of the day came on the Grandstand Court. The ninth seed Gaston Gaudio lost to American wild card Brain Baker 7-6, 6-2, 6-4. Maria Sharapova, women's top seed, blasted her way past Eleni Daniilidou of Greece 6-1, 6-1 in just 66 minutes. Sharapova was crowned the world number one just last week. Fourth seed Kim Clijsters needed just 53 minutes on the Louis Armstrong court before sealing a comprehensive 6-1, 6-2, first round victory over Martina Mueller of Germany.
