New York:

In Friday's final match on the Arthur Ashe court, Roger Federer booked his place in the third round of the US Open after a victory over Fabrice Santoro. Santoro provided many of the game's high points, but still ended up a loser in straight sets to Roger Federer. The Frenchman demonstrated some of his flashier shots - one between his legs, running with his back to the net; another a behind-the-back volley. Federer, though, was content to be merely efficient, coming through 7-5, 7-5, 7-6 in two hours and 17 minutes. (AP)
