Davydenko advances to semifinals

Top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko and Jiri Novak advanced to the semifinals of the Hypo Group tennis tournament on Thursday.

Poertschach: Top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko and Jiri Novak advanced to the semifinals of the Hypo Group tennis tournament on Thursday. Davydenko easily defeated Potito Starace of Italy 6-2, 6-1, while Novak topped Juergen Melzer of Austria 6-7 (7), 6-4, 6-4. Melzer, who advanced to the final eight earlier Thursday after Richard Gasquet of France retired with an injury while trailing 6-0, 1-1, was shaken by the quarterfinal defeat. "It's hard to find any words," Melzer told Austrian television. Earlier, Davydenko beat Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo 6-2, 6-4, while Novak defeated fifth-seeded Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina 6-1, 3-6, 6-2. Also, Andrei Pavel topped Austrian wild-card Oliver Marach 6-4, 6-2 to move into the semifinals. Pavel will take on seventh-seeded Luis Horna of Peru, who beat Juan Monaco of Argentina 6-3, 6-4. (AP)
