Davis Cup: Sweden takes 2-0 lead

Sweden has taken a 2-0 lead in the Davis Cup World Group play-off against India.

New Delhi: India's Davis Cup hopes were hanging by a thread after they conceded a decisive 2-0 lead to seven-time champions Sweden in the World Group play-off today. After losing both the singles rubbers, the doubles pair of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi were down a set but a break up against Jonas Bjorkman and Simon Aspelin when play was called off for the day due to bad light. Bjorkman and Aspelin were leading as they took the first set 6-3 in 36 minutes with a break on Paes' serve. But the Indian duo rallied to break Bjorkman in the fourth game of the second set to go 3-1 up before the play was suspended. Bopanna loses Earlier, Thomas Johansson defeated a fighting Rohan Bopanna 7-6 (3) 7-6 (2) 7-6 (4) in the second singles match. The match was suspended during the second set on Friday due to inclement weather that also washed out entire play yesterday. The doubles match is scheduled to resume at 10:00 am (IST) tomorrow followed by the two reverse singles. Paes, captain of the Indian team, was clearly not happy with the play being suspended just when the home pair had gained the momentum. Jonas Bjorkman had defeated Prakash Amritraj 6-4 6-4 6-4 in the opening singles on the first day. (PTI)
