New Delhi: The All India Tennis Association (AITA) has announced the Indian team for the Davis Cup tie, starting on September 23. While rivals Sweden have not formally announced their team yet, big guns Thomas Johannsson and Jonas Bjorkman look all set to feature in the tie. For India, unless Captain Leander Paes plans on stepping in again, (like in the Asia Oceania group tie against Uzbekistan), the singles matches are likely to be taken care of by Prakash Amritraj and Rohan Bopanna. Sporting heroes However, the AITA is not planning to replace Paes-Bhupathi doubles combination till the next Olympics. In-fact, though the association has not yet recommended Mahesh Bhupathi for a Khel Ratna, the AITA Secretary believes he (Bhupathi) should be next in line for the country's highest sporting honour. The AITA has also decided to recommend players like Vishal Uppal, Harsh Mankad and Vinod Sridhar for the Arjuna Awards. Meanwhile, Sania Mirza's success has given a fillip to the AITA's plans of promoting tennis at the grassroots level. The association believes such role models are going a long way in making the sport popular among young Indians, and a large number of fans will turn up to watch the Davis Cup.
