Filderstadt, Germany:

American Lindsay Davenport won the Filderstadt Grand Prix on Sunday after world number one Amelie Mauresmo retired injured after the first set in the final of the $650,000 event. Frenchwoman Mauresmo bowed out with a strained thigh muscle in her left leg after Davenport had taken the opening set 6-2. She will now undergo tests to see if she can play in next week's Kremlin Cup. If Mauresmo withdraws, Davenport will have to win just one match to take over the world's top spot. Davenport said that she was disappointed at how she had won her seventh title of the year and 45th of her career. But Davenport's win and possible ascent to world number one for the fifth time was overshadowed by rumours that the 28-year-old would retire by 2006 to start a family. She will take home with her a new Porsche sports car and the winner's purse of $98,500, adding to her career earnings of more than $18 million. (AP)
