Czink records win at Canberra

Melinda Czink of Hungary beat Italian Antonella Serra Zanetti 6-2, 6-2 on the opening day of the Canberra International tennis tournament.

Melinda Czink of Hungary beat Italian Antonella Serra Zanetti 6-2, 6-2 on the opening day of the Canberra International tennis tournament. In other matches, Cho Yoon-jeong of South Korea upset Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden 6-4, 6-4 and fifth-seeded Roberta Vinci downed Maria Vento-Kabchi of Venezuela 6-4, 6-4. Meanwhile, second-seeded Marion Bartoli of France withdrew from the tournament due to a hip flexor injury suffered during Saturday's final win in Auckland over Russian Vera Zvonareva. Bartoli, who won her first WTA tournament, is expected to play in the Australian Open beginning January 16. Qualifier Tatiana Poutcheck of Belarus was granted a wild card into the main draw in Canberra after the late withdrawal of Jelena Dokic due to a groin injury. (AP)
