Bucharest: Third-seeded Albert Costa of Spain and No. 5 Nikolay Davydenko of Russia were eliminated in the first round of the BCR Open here. Costa, who received a wild-card entry, was routed 6-1, 6-2 by Paul-Henri Mathieu of France, and Davydenko fell to Felix Mantilla of Spain 7-6 (7/3), 6-0 at the Arenele Progresul BNR. Meanwhile, No. 4 Igor Andreev of Russia beat Kristof Vliegen of Belgium 6-2, 6-3, and defending champion David Sanchez of Spain was playing a late match against Raemon Sluiter of the Netherlands. Frenchman Arnaud Di Pasquale advanced when German Daniel Elsner retired due to a severe cold while trailing 4-0, state news agency Rompres reported. Today, top-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain meets Victor Hanescu of Romania, and No. 2 Florian Mayer of Germany faces Dennis Van Scheppingen of the Netherlands. (AP)
