Beijing:

Martina Hingis advanced to the second round of the China Open, beating Sun Tiantian of China 6-2, 6-3.

Hingis dropped her opening service game but broke back immediately to take control of the match, dropping serve only one more time on Tuesday.

"She started very well and hit some good return points," Hingis said. "I was not ready in the first game but later when I broke hers, my confidence came back."

The former top-ranked player will next face Peng Shuai, who beat Chinese qualifier Xu Yi-Fan 6-1, 6-4.

"In my next match, I definitely will get ready from the first point, not from the first game," Hingis said.

The fifth-seeded Hingis, a five-time Grand Slam champion, returned to tennis last year after about three years off because of an ankle injury. She was playing in China for the first time.

"I'm looking forward to next year's Olympic Games. That's why I decided to come here and have a look at the city," Hingis said.

Sixth-seeded Agnes Szavay of Hungary, seventh-seeded Akiko Morigami of Japan and eighth-seeded Eleni Daniilidou of Greece also advanced.

Szavay beat Marina Erakovic of New Zealand 7-5, 6-3, while Morigami defeated Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain (7), 6-4, 6-4 and Daniilidou beat Olga Govortsova of Bulgaria 6-2, 6-1.
