Chile beat the US 2-1 at the World Team Cup on Wednesday, with Andy Roddick retiring in the first set after injuring his left foot.

Chile beat the US 2-1 at the World Team Cup on Wednesday, with Andy Roddick retiring in the first set after injuring his left foot. Nicolas Massu was leading 4-2 when Roddick pulled out. Paul Capdeville then beat Robby Ginepri 6-4, 6-4 in the second singles match to keep the Americans from having a chance to reach Saturday's final. In doubles, Bob and Mike Bryan earned a consolation victory for the US by beating Fernando Gonzalez and Nicolas Massu 6-4, 7-5. Croatia also beat Spain 2-1 after David Ferrer surprised fourth-ranked Ivan Ljubicic 6-2, 6-2. Mario Ancic then outlasted Feliciano Lopez 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 make it 1-1, but Ljubicic and Ivo Karlovic topped Lopez and Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 7-6 (4) to earn Croatia the right to play Chile for a place in the final. The eight-nation field in Duesseldorf is split into two groups, with the winners of each group advancing to the final. Argentina, the Czech Republic, Germany and Italy are in the Red Group, while the United States, Chile, Croatia, and Spain are in the Blue Group. (AP)
