Chennai:
Even before the weeklong sports festival has started, the fun has already begun. T-shirts, sneakers, Tennis rackets, cricket bats autographed by sporting legends like Moya, Youzhny, Nadal and Bagdhatis for the highest bidders.
And the biggest catch of the evening was coffee with the defending singles and doubles champion of last years Chennai Open, Xavier Malisse. And just for Rs 25,000, which even
former Indian tennis player stated as very expensive.
The money collected at the auction, more than Rs 11 lakh, will go to two Chennai based NGOs, Tanker Foundation and Balavidyalaya.
"There are a lot of deprived people who really need the money and we shouldn't waste it otherwise"
"It's not the coffee or Maria Sharapova autographed T-shirt but its all for a good cause," said Prakash Amritraj, Tennis Player.
"Hopefully one day I will contribute a lot more. Right now I'm doing as much as I can and hopefully I can do more and more as years go by".
Clearly it was the spirit to contribute that ruled the charity auction with player and fans from across the world coming together for a cause.
