Sweden and the United States went into the doubles rubber of their Davis Cup semi-final at Gothenburg's Scandinavium arena level at 1-1.

Veteran Jonas Bjorkman and US Open doubles champion Simon Aspelin took on American twins Bob and Mike Bryan.

35-year-old Bjorkman, a former doubles world number one, and Aspelin matched the Americans all the way in the first set which had featured no breaks.

The teams traded numerous set points in the tie-break until Aspelin eventually produced an error to surrender the tie-break 13-11.

The American pair broke Bjorkman's serve in the fourth game of the second set to give the USA a 3-1 lead.

Bjorkman's serve was broken once more in the eighth game when Bob Bryan's return on the line clinched the second set 6-2.

Bjorkman dropped his serve for the third time in the match, giving the Americans a 3-1 lead in the third set after Aspelin netted a return.

The Americans then held their serves the rest of the way to secure a 7-6 (13-11) 6-2 6-3 victory as Bob Bryan served an ace on match point.

The reverse singles take place on Sunday with Thomas Johansson starting against Andy Roddick followed by Joachim Johansson against James Blake.

The winners will play either Russia or Germany in the final in November. Germany lead the holders 2-1 after the doubles.
