Bondarenko upsets Groenefeld in Qatar Open

Kateryna Bondarenko beat seventh-seeded Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 to advance to the second round of the Qatar Open on Tuesday.

Kateryna Bondarenko beat seventh-seeded Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 to advance to the second round of the Qatar Open on Tuesday. Bondarenko took advantage of inconsistent play by Groenefeld. The German leveled the match at one set each but had a string of unforced errors in the decider to become the first seed to exit the tournament. Fifth-seeded Patty Schnyder defeated France's Aravane Rezai 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, while Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain also advanced after beating American Meghan Shaughnessy 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Alicia Molik of Australia, runner-up here in 2005, won her first-round match when Japan's Ai Sugiyama retired with a foot injury. Molik was leading 0-6, 6-2, 3-1 at the time. ." The top four seeds in the tournament - Justine Henin of Belgium, Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova, Martina Hingis of Switzerland and Serbia's Jelena Jankovic - play their second round matches on Wednesday.
