New York:

India's Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi of Belarus defeated Julian Knowle, of Austria, and Michael Kohlmann of Germany in straight sets 6-4, 6-0 at the US open. Meanwhile Vijay Amritraj's son, Prakash Amritraj has lost in the first round of the singles. Prakash earned a wild card for the final grand slam of the year, but had the misfortune of running into Thailand's Paradorn Srichaphan. The Thai player, coming of his first ATP tour win at the TD Waterhouse Cup in New York last week, won in straight sets. Srichaphan is the first Asian player since Leander Paes, four years ago to win an ATP singles title. Earlier Prakash and his cousin Stephen had been knocked out in the first round of the men's doubles as well.
