Melbourne:

Mahesh Bhupathi and his Bahamian partner Mark Knowles sailed into the Australian Open men's doubles quarterfinals, defeating Nicolas Lapentti and Tommy Robredo 6-3, 6-4 on Monday.

The third seeded Indo-Bahamian pair took 70 minutes to dispatch the unseeded Ecuadorian-Spanish duo in their third round clash.

However, the winners were trifle patchy as they, in total, squandered six breakpoints in the match.

Bhupathi-Knowles broke their rivals thrice and saved two breakpoints en route to the victory. They next face the Spanish pair of Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco.

Among the juniors, Kaza Vinayak Sharma joined compatriot and top seed Yuki Bhambri in the boys singles second round after carving out a facile 6-4, 6-2 win over Sweden's Patrik Brydolf.

However, it was curtains for Sudarwa Sitaram, who lost his opening round clash 3-6, 4-6 to Pierre-Hugues Herbert of France.

The Indian challenge ended in the girls singles event with the defeat of Kyra Shroff, who suffered a 0-6, 3-6 mauling at the hands of Monika Tumova of Czech Republic.

The combination of Vinayak Sharma and Roanak Manuja fell in the first round of boys doubles after losing 6-7 (1), 0-6 in the first round.

In girls doubles, the Indian pair of Tanvi Shah and Rashmi Teltumbde went down fighting against Ester Goldfeld of America and Briton Hannah James. They lost 4-6, 6-7 (5) in the first round.

Shroff and her Canadian partner Eugenie Bouchard though advanced to second round after their opponents conceded their first round match. The Indo-Canadian pair had won the first set 6-1 when their opponents called it quits.
