Lausanne: Austria took a 1-0 lead over Switzerland in the Fed Cup World Group I playoffs tie on Saturday after Yvonne Meusburger defeated 15-year-old Stefanie Voegele 7-6 (4), 6-1. In a tie featuring a new generation of players, Meusburger is at least five years older than the others and the only one in her 20s. Ranked No. 135 in the WTA rankings, the 21-year-old Meusburger is by far the best-ranked player in Lausanne and the most experienced singles player. She gave Austria its only point against France in the first round of the Fed Cup in Poertschach by defeating Australian Open semifinalist Nathalie Dechy. Voegele was the winner of the "Nike Junior Tour International Masters" in South Africa in 2003. Recently back from a foot injury, 16-year-old Timea Bacsinszky faced 14-year-old Tamira Paszek in the day's second singles match on the red clay of the outdoor TC Stade Lausanne. Switzerland and Austria have met in Fed Cup just once before, in 2000, with the Swiss prevailing in a marathon tie which was decided in the final set of the final rubber. (AP)
