Melbourne:

India's main hope in the Australian Open, Sania Mirza, has advanced to the second round after beating Uzbeki wildcard entrant Iroda Tulyaganova.

Sania, the 31st seed, had a minor stutter to begin with, and was broken in the first set.

But she recovered in fine style, bringing out her full array of strokes and completing an emphatic 6-4, 6-2 victory in an hour and nine minutes.

Sania had 21 winners to her opponent's 15, but what made the difference in the end were the 11 double-faults by Tulyaganova.

Sania will face an unseeded opponent in the second round, but could potentially meet 8th-seed Venus Williams in the third round.

Mirza has struggled with injury over the last year, and the problems have continued in 2008. She had an average outing in the Hopman Cup team event before reaching the quarter-finals of a Tier-IV event in Hobart.
