Malmoe, Sweden:

Mark Philippoussis and Lleyton Hewitt won their opening singles matches on Friday to give Australia a commanding 2-0 lead over Sweden in the Davis Cup quarterfinals. Philippoussis rode his powerful serve to 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 win over Jonas Bjorkman in the first match on the Baltiska Hallen's hardcourt. Hewitt, the world's top-ranked player, then fought off a tough challenge by Thomas Enqvist in the last two sets en route to a 6-4, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 victory. Bjorkman and Enqvist - who have never played Davis Cup doubles - must beat Wayne Arthurs and Todd Woodbridge on Saturday to keep Sweden's slim chances alive in the best-of-5 match tie. (AP)
