Agassi in third round of Madrid Masters

Madrid, Spain:

Andre Agassi returned to competitive tennis action on Tuesday with an appearance at the Madrid Masters Series event in Spain. Agassi had had a bye in the first round, and his match against Max Mirnyi of Belarus was his first since his US Open quarterfinal defeat to world number one Roger Federer last month. The 34-year-old American had to come through a battle of wills in the opening set. Struggling to find his rhythm early on, the second seed fought off five break points - but showed all his experience to force a tiebreak, which he edged by seven points to five. Agassi, who won here in 2002, broke Mirnyi's strong serve to lead 4-3 and seize control of the second set. Good fightAnd the giant Belarussian then faltered when serving to stay in the match at 3-5. After going down 0-40, he saved two match points - but stumbled on the third to hand Agassi victory. Agassi is looking for his second Masters title this season - he won in Cincinnati - and the 18th of his career. In the third round, Agassi will face either Rafael Nadal of Spain or 14th-seeded Vincent Spadea of the United States.(AP)
