Maryland:

Triple world champion Michael Phelps broke his own American record in the 200-meter freestyle to capture his third title in as many races at the United States Swim Championships. Phelps won in 1 min, 45.99 seconds to beat his old mark of 1:46.60 set July 23 in Barcelona at the World Championships, where the 18-year-old from nearby Baltimore broke an unprecedented five world records. "It was tough. The last few meters I was struggling to get in," Phelps said. "I did what I wanted, broke 1:46. This is more relaxed but I'm treating this like worlds. I'm coming to the block with everything I had at worlds." While off the world mark of 1:44.06 set by Australia's Ian Thorpe in 2001 at Japan, Phelps showed he has the power to capture a spot on the US freestyle relays for the Athens Olympics one year from now. "I'm beginning to like freestyle events more," Phelps said, excited about his chances in Friday's 400 freestyle final. "We could have another exciting one. I want to do my best times and break as many records as possible." Phelps, who won the 100 freestyle and 200 backstroke titles Wednesday, is not entered in his specialities, which produced world records and titles in the 200 and 400 individual medley and 200 butterfly and made him king of the pool.
