Despatie captures gold in diving

Canada's Alexander Despatie won the gold medal in the 10-metre platform diving event at the World Swimming Championships on Saturday.

Canada's Alexander Despatie won the gold medal in the 10-metre platform diving event at the World Swimming Championships on Saturday. Despatie finished with a winning total of 716.91 points, against 697.74 for silver medallist Mathew Helm of Australia. China's Tian Liang, who won this event at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and the 2001 worlds, captured the bronze with 696.06. Chinese diver Hu Jia, the silver medallist in Sydney, led for the first five rounds before flopping in his final two dives, to finish fourth with 683.55 points. (AP)
