The Olympic achievement of Michael Phelps, who on Sunday became the first competitor to win eight gold medals at a single Games, breaking Mark Spitz's 1972 record of seven:

400m individual medley, Aug 10

GOLD

Won second straight Olympic gold in world record (4:03.84). Phelps beat rivals Laszlo Cseh and Ryan Lochte, and lowered the world record for the eighth time.

4x100m free relay, Aug 11

GOLD

Added gold to 2004 Olympic bronze. Phelps posted an American record 47.51 on the lead-off leg and anchor Jason Lezak came from behind as the United States saw off favorites France in a world record of 3:08.24.

200m freestyle, Aug 12

GOLD

Added gold to 2004 Olympic bronze. Lowered own world record to 1:42.96 in dominant performance.

200m butterfly, Aug 13

GOLD

Overcame problem with goggles to win second straight Olympic title in a world record of 1:52.03. Phelps's 10th career Olympic gold saw him move past icons Paavo Nurmi, Carl Lewis, Mark Spitz and Larysa Latynina (nine golds each) as the most successful Olympian of all time.

4x200m free relay, Aug 13

Phelps won his second straight Olympic gold in the 4x200 free relay. He led off the US team that crushed the world record with a time of 6:58.56.

200m individual medley, Aug 15

GOLD

Won second straight Olympic gold in world record of 1:54.23, lowering mark he set at US trials in July. Finished 2.29sec in front of silver medallist Cseh with Lochte third.

100m butterfly, Aug 16

GOLD

Won second straight Olympic gold with gut-wrenching, come-from-behind victory over Serbian Milorad Cavic by one-hundredth of a second.

4x100m medley relay, Aug 17

GOLD

Won second straight Olympic gold as United States set world record of 3:29.34. Phelps, swimming butterfly took over in third place and put the Americans ahead, and Lezak held on for the win.
