One Hyderabadi girl is going places while another is definitely not going to the second round of the singles at Roland Garros. Saina Nehwal lifted the Philippines Open badminton crown but in sharp contrast Sania Mirza went down to Russian Anastasia Myskina in the first round of the French Open on Tuesday. The loss is another one in a long list of disappointing performances in 2006. Sania's slump this year shows no signs of getting better. In her second singles grand slam outing of the year, the world number 40 succumbed in just over an hour to Myskina. The 2004 French Open champion hardly broke a sweat as she completed a straightforward 6-4, 6-1 win. Continuous slump The WTA tour's Newcomer of 2005 hasn't warmed up to 2006 at all. In the nine WTA events she's played, Sania's managed to get past the first round only five times and on each of those occasions, she's gone down in the second round. The 2005 Hyderabad Open winner has performed well below her potential and although she has occasionally stretched some top players like Martina Hingis, she's also had losses to players ranked as low as 1,144. Sania ended 2005 as the world's 34th ranked player. But there's no doubt that she'll have to work on form and fitness if she is to match that ranking again.Topics mentioned in this article
