Gustavo Kuerten of Brazil marched into final of the Brasil Open after beating Ramon Delgado of Paraguay 6-4 6-7 (2) 6-3 while Russia's Anastasia Myskina defeated Eleni Daniilidou of Greece 6-3 0-6 6-2 in the women's final. Kuerten, three-time French Open champion, came out firing in the 40 degree C heat, breaking Delgado's service in the first game and taking the second without losing a point. A former world No 1, Kuerten a will face Guillermo Coria of Argentina in today's final. Coria beat Cecil Mamiit of the United States 7-5 6-2. The sixth-seeded Kuerten had help from the boisterous crowd, which seemed to unsettle the Paraguayan. But Delgado gained in confidence in the second set as both players broke service twice. After failing to convert two set points in the 11th game, Delgado kept his cool in the searing heat to win the tiebreaker. Kuerten, who racked up an impressive 25 aces, broke Delgado in the fourth game on the deciding set to close out the match. In the other semifinal, Mamiit lead 3-0 in the first set, but Coria rebounded to turn the score around to win the set. Coria immediately went 4-0 up in the second, and although Mamiit managed to break Coria's service a comeback never materialised. Unseeded Coria - who has not lost a set in the tournament - said he was keen to play against Kuerten on his home turf. "He's beaten me twice, in Monte Carlo and Roland Garros, and it would be good to play him in his home," Coria said. "Back then he was impressive and I couldn't do anything. But now it will be different. I am more confident, more experienced and I have to play my usual game, fighting and chasing every ball," Coria said. In the women's final, Myskina won the first set comfortably but collapsed in the second, letting Daniilidou back into the match. Myskina shot ahead 4-0 in the final set and held on to win. There were no surprises in the women's doubles final, where top seeds Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain and Paola Suarez of Argentina defeated Emilie Loit of France and Rossana Neffa-de los Rios of Paraguay, 6-4 6-1. Later, Kuerten and partner Andre Sa played in the men's doubles semifinal against Gaston Etlis and Luis Lobo of Argentina.(AP)Topics mentioned in this article
