New Delhi:
Tania Sachdeva won her first national chess title last week and that itself is a big achievement given how competitive chess is in India. She is the 13th national ladies chess champion but interestingly she is only the first from the north of the country to hold this title. Earlier, women's chess used to be dominated by players from the south. The child prodigy who won five titles in the British championships at the age of eight is now going to be a regular member of the Indian team. "I think I'm a very normal typical teenager and I love dancing, shopping and watching movies. But where I am different is when it comes to my game. I am really focused, I realise my priorities and I am somehow able to balance my chess and studies," she says. Strong support Tania may not be in the same league as Sania Mirza in terms of endorsements but she does have plenty of support in a country where chess rules the roost. "Chess can be like cricket in India but we need more support," she adds. A national championship win means not only a ticket to all international events in 2007, but also an opportunity to lead the Indian women's chess team. But there is no stopping this Delhi girl and somewhere down the line she also wants to open a chess academy. Here is wishing her good luck for that and a lot more.Topics mentioned in this article
