Melbourne:
Defending champion Jennifer Capriati was given a run for her money by Italy's Rita Grande before squeezing through to take her place in the Australian Open quarter-finals here today. The American struggled with her serve but was strong from the baseline and overcame the 20th seed 6-3, 7-6 (11/9) despite having both thighs strapped as a precaution against a niggling hip injury. The top seed will play powerful Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo in the last eight after the seventh seed, a 1999 finalist, beat Germany's Marlene Weingartner 6-0, 4 6, 7-5. Mauresmo, who lost to Martina Hingis here in the 1999 final after beating Lindsay Davenport in a semi-final, looked set for a decisive win when she stormed through the opening set without the loss of a game in just 19 minutes. But she encountered stiffer resistance in the second set and had to cope with a rain delay at 2-4 when the stadium roof had to be closed for play to continue. It was fluctuating tennis in the deciding set with the German breaking in the opening game but handing it back in the fourth. Weingartner again broke Mauresmo in the seventh game after the French player had held game point, but she couldn't hold the advantage and Mauresmo swept back with a powerful forehand cross court. Mauresmo held for 6-5 but Weingartner needing to hold serve to force a tiebreak, was broken to love with Mauresmo wrapping it up on her first of three match points. Sixth seed Belgian Justine Henin is also through to the last eight. She beat Russian Elena Dementieva 6-0, 6-3 in the fourth round. (PTI)Topics mentioned in this article
