Sacramento:
Marion Jones, her vulnerability seeming to grow with each event, finished a shocking seventh but managed to advance to the final of the long jump at the US Olympic trials. Jones, by far the best US long jumper in a weak field, was among the 12 qualifiers who advanced to Thursday's final. But she failed to reach the automatic qualifying mark, and got worse with each of her three jumps on Monday night. Jones, who won an unprecedented five medals at the 2000 Sydney Games, failed Saturday night to make the US squad in the 100 meters - an event in which she is the defending Olympic champion. Other contestants The US Olympic Track and Field Trials continued on Monday - as Olympic dreams became reality for many athletes. The top three finishers in each event at the Olympic Trials who have met the qualifying "A" standard are named to the US Olympic Team for Athens. A number of finals were contested on the track and in the field events, which were held in the Californian capital, Sacramento. Jearl Miles-Clark earned a trip to her fifth Olympics by winning the women's 800 metres. The 37-year-old finished in one-minute, 59.06 seconds to hold off Nicole Teter and sister-in-law Hazel Clark. Jonathan Johnson won the men's 800 metres in one-minutes, 44.77 seconds to earn an Olympic spot along with Khadevis Robinson and Derrick Peterson. James Parker won the men's hammer throw with a toss of 254 feet - six inches (76.4 metres). He was the only competitor to reach the Olympic qualifying standard. Women's action In other action, 2003 US Champion Aretha Hill won the women's discus with throw of 208 feet-6-inches (62.5 metres). Tisha Waller won the women's high jump, as she cleared 6-feet-6-inches (198 cm's), but failed in three attempts to break the U.S. record. Chaunte Howard and Amy Acuff finished second and third and qualified for the games. Shayne Culpepper used a strong kick on the final home stretch to pass Marla Runyan to win the women's 5,000 metre race. Culpepper finished in 15 minutes, 7.41 seconds followed by Runyan and Shalane Flanagan who all qualified for the Athens games. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
