Who is responsible for the debacle?

Who is responsible for the debacle?

New Delhi:

Eight-time gold medallists India have failed to make it to the Olympics for the first time since their debut in 1928. Scoring twice in the first-half, Britain ended India's Olympic dreams with a 2-0 win in the final of the World Hockey qualifying tournament at the Prince of Wales Country Club in Santiago.

This was certainly the saddest moment for Indian hockey. While the Britain players celebrated to the accompaniment of the song "We are the Champions", the Indian, heads bowed, shoulders slumped, could only watch their rivals rejoice, having played smarter if not better hockey.

After the debacle, came the aftershocks. Chief hockey coach Joaquim Carvalho stepped down along with his support staff, but Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) chief KPS Gill brushed aside demands for his resignation, saying he would "respond to these things at a later stage".

"We do not have an instant coffee machine that you can get results instantly. It takes time to regain your position. We have put the process in place and the results will take some time", he said.

This, however, is not the time for the blame game. It's time to introspect and find a solution.

What went wrong? Did the team give in to pressure? Was the planning and composition of the team right? Or, are we simply running out of ideas? Who do you think is responsible for Indian hockey's sorry state of affairs?

Should KPS Gill resign? Is his lackadaisical approach to be blamed for the defeat? Should he be asked to quit? Do you think instead of people like him only sportsmen should be allowed to head sports bodies?
