Three Indians to feature in MHL: report

New Delhi:

Star striker Dhanraj Pillay would be one of the three Indians who are likely to feature in this year's Malaysian Hockey League (MHL), starting on August 6. According to a report in The Star newspaper, services of Pillay have been hired by Ernst and Young, who have also signed India international Lazrus Barla. Len Aiyappa, the top scorer in the League last year with 35 goals when he played for Ernst and Young, has been hired by Bank Simpanan Nasional for the 10-team competition, the report added. Dhanraj will be playing for the third time in the MHL. The flamboyant forward, all set to play in the Olympics, will only arrive in Malaysia in September after the mega event. Aiyappa, who was not included among the probables for the Olympics, replaces Pakistani Imran Warsi as Nasional's main penalty corner striker this year. Lazarus was the skipper of the Indian junior team which took part in the Asia Cup in Kuala Lumpur in 2000. He also played in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, partnering Dilip Tirkey in central defence. The 25-year-old from Orissa, considered one of the best defensive tacklers of the ball, fell out of favour with the national selectors in 2001. (PTI)
