Stage set for the big semis

Kuala Lumpur:

South Korea would be relying on their pace and guts when they take on Germany in the first semi-final of the 10th World Cup hockey here tomorrow. In the other semi-final, Australia would look to avenge their defeat to Holland in the Sydney Olympic Games. Korea's assistant coach Kim Sang Ryul, who had said before the World Cup that Korea was rebuilding itself eyeing Athens 2004, was surprised at the team's progress. "It's a pleasant surprise," he said about the semis berth after Korea lost to England yesterday. But the semi-final against Germany would be a tough path to traverse and Korea might be forced to play three 'unfit' players troubled by niggling injuries. However, coach Young Kyu Kim said the team would go all out for a place in the final. "Playing in the semi-finals is an honour," he said. "And we will play with honour. The boys will play to win and enter the final," he added. Germany, however, after a disastrous campaign at Sydney, where they finished fifth, are only a couple of games away from their maiden Cup triumph. Germany, who edged Pakistan out in the final league match to reach the last four, last played Korea in the final of the Sultan Azlan Shah tournament in August last year, which they won 3-2. Coach Bernhard Peters would look for the same resilience from his boys. (PTI)
