Canberra:
The Women's Champions Trophy international hockey tournament continued in Canberra, Australia on Sunday. The first match of day two saw Argentina face China. Argentina were looking for their first win of the tournament after losing to defending champions The Netherlands on Saturday and Maria de la Paz Hernandez set them on the way in the 14th minute. The South Americans went 2-0 ahead 22 minutes into the second half through Maria D'Elia and Alejandra Gulla sealed a 3-0 win six minutes later. The victory lifted Argentina above China and into third place in the tournament standings. Perfect start Play continued with Germany facing The Netherlands. The reigning champions made a perfect start to the game with Kim Lammers hitting the target for a simple goal in the first minute of the game. The Netherlands doubled the lead over their European rivals just three minutes later. Germany's defence was in disarray and Ellen Hoog's magnificent reverse drive from an acute angle was more than worthy of a 2-0 lead. There was no change to the scoreline before half-time, but the Dutch went on the rampage in the second half. Janneke Schopman, Sylvia Karres, Miek van Geenhuizen and Saskia Fuchs all scored to make it 6-0, before Maike Stockel pulled a goal back for the Germans. Maartje Goderie scored before Fuchs grabbed her second of the game though and the 8-1 win lifted The Netherlands to the top of the standings. Chasing a win Australia were chasing a win that would see them stay level on points with The Netherlands when they met Korea in Sunday's final game. The host nation finally made the breakthrough six minutes into the second half with Karen Smith's solo effort after Australia had botched a penalty corner. Korea heaped on the pressure as they went in search of an equaliser, only for Australia to kill off the game in the 63rd minute. A speculative pass was poorly cleared by the Korean goalkeeper, whose weak kick fell straight to Nikki Hudson. The in-form Hudson made it two goals in as many games after she weaved her way into space and smashed in a shot to make it 2-0. That would be the final score and Australia sit in second place in the table with two wins from two games. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
